CABEI highlights its environmental management at the 8th International Congress on Leadership in Sustainable Construction

El Salvador, July 25, 2025. - In line with its Institutional Strategy 2025-2029, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) participated in the 8th International Congress on Leadership in Sustainable Construction, an event that promotes the exchange of knowledge, experiences, projects, and best practices in sustainable construction at the national and international levels.

During the Congress, CABEI gave a presentation entitled "Sustainability in action: CABEI, a positive bank for the planet," which highlighted how sustainability is integrated at the strategic level, based on the pillar of positive impact, and how this is reflected in internal environmental management, emphasizing the progress and achievements in the implementation of sustainable and responsible practices in its operations, under internationally recognized environmental standards, which seek to reduce the environmental impact generated by the operation of its facilities.

In particular, it was highlighted that, starting in 2019 and on a gradual basis, CABEI has obtained ISO 14001:2015 certification for its Environmental Management System (EMS) for the administrative and operative activities carried out at its facilities in Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, as well as LEED certification in Operation and Maintenance for its building in El Salvador and, earlier this year, LEED certification in Design and Construction for Nicaragua.

CABEI emphasized the significance of these certifications and some of their benefits, such as the neutralization of CO₂ emissions from its operations, improved waste management, and operational efficiency, thereby promoting a healthy and responsible environment. Specifically for El Salvador, in the period 2022-2024, 119 tons of CO₂ emissions have been avoided through energy generation and the use of hybrid vehicles, 387 tons of CO₂ emissions have been offset, 170 megawatts of solar energy have been generated, and 8.8 tons of waste have been managed for recycling.

As part of its sustainability commitments for the period 2025-2029, internally, the implementation of ISO 14001 will be expanded to all of the Bank's facilities. In addition, CABEI has committed to promoting three strategic initiatives: becoming carbon neutral by offsetting 120% of its remaining annual emissions; becoming a zero-waste bank through the Zero Waste to Landfill standard, managing its waste in a circular manner to prevent it from ending up in landfills; and achieving water balance by returning more water to the environment than is used in its operations.

The 8th International Congress on Leadership in Sustainable Construction, organized by the El Salvador Green Building Council, was held in San Salvador on July 21 and 22, bringing together experts, leaders, and professionals committed to sustainability to address issues of climate resilience and adaptation related to construction, urban regeneration, sustainable and smart buildings, and their contribution to sustainability.
