Alexandria Police Chief Delivers on Key Priorities During First 100 Days

Outcomes of 100-Day Action Plan Highlight Significant Steps Toward Progressive and Collaborative Policing in Alexandria

Alexandria, Va. - Today, Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire releases the outcomes of his 100-Day Action Plan, a report highlighting progress toward his administration's goal to continue to build a healthy and resilient workforce and make Alexandria one of the safest cities in America.

The "First 100 Days" outlines the process Chief McGuire followed to address key priorities for the department and the City that reinforced his objectives to develop new relationships and strengthen existing ones within the community; review and evaluate policies and practices to make the department and its workforce more efficient and effective; respond to the immediate needs of officers, communities, and stakeholders; and report information and initiatives internally and to the public.

"Over the last four months, I have had the opportunity to listen to both our police officers and the community through several listening sessions we called "Conversations with the Chief" to gain a deeper understanding of their key concerns. The outcomes shared in this plan represent the first step in our collective and collaborative journey to strengthen public safety in our city," said Chief McGuire.

Highlights from Chief McGuire's first 100 days include:

  • The implementation of a crime review process that utilizes evidence-based policing as a framework that concentrates on focused interventions, data-driven decision-making, and deployment of police resources
  • The evaluation of key leadership vacancies and the facilitation of a workload analysis of department units to improve organizational efficiency
  • APD Leadership participated in site visits to several law enforcement agencies to deepen relationships and evaluate the crime review process for those organizations, which resulted in developing a model for the APD to enhance its response to emerging crime trends
  • The evaluation of policies and practices that will aide in developing a work plan to ensure fairness and consistency applied to all personnel as it relates to internal advancement opportunities, discipline, and promotions
  • The reaffirmation to commit to the 30x30 Initiative to improve workplace equity and departmental policies
  • The evaluation of patrol shift schedules to better support work-life balance for officers
  • The establishment of a Chief's Employee Advisory Board to facilitate ongoing dialogue between staff and the Chief of Police
  • The establishment of a Chief's Community Advisory Board to serve as an extension of the community's voice, comprised of community stakeholders representing civil rights organizations, businesses, civic organizations, and religious institutions
  • The implementation of an elevated communication plan that includes a Chief's Brief to share key updates internally to ensure personnel remain engaged and informed
  • The establishment of an Officer Wellness Advisory Group comprised of sworn officers and professional staff to identify resources that provide the necessary support to officers in managing stress, physical and mental health
  • The launch of a pilot mentoring program, Alexandria Initiative on Mentoring (AIM), focused on supporting the social-emotional well-being of sixth and seventh graders at George Washington Middle School

"These action items set the foundation for how we will continue to deliver high-quality services to the communities we serve and reaffirms our commitment to our sworn and professional staff. The Alexandria Police Department is moving forward and will prioritize public safety while supporting our officers in service to our community," said Chief McGuire. "We are working to advance public safety and establish a blueprint for American policing.
