The City of Tampa is proud to unveil its second brand-new paving machine.

Combined with the new paving machine purchased last year, this latest addition will provide City paving crews the updated equipment they need to pave more streets, even faster, and at up to half the cost of hiring an outside contractor.

So far this year, roughly 50 lane miles have been paved across the city, making life smoother for residents in neighborhoods like: Port Tampa, Oak Park, Virginia Park, Ballast Point, Palma Ceia Pines, and many others. That represents an increase of more than 35% versus the same time period last year, and more than 50% higher than the same period in 2023.

The new machine is a Caterpillar AP1055 -- a top-of-the-line fuel efficient model which is quieter and easier to operate than previous models and is capable of paving up to 25 feet across in a single pass. It is a similar model to the one highlighted in September 2024. It costs just over $711,000. With two new pavers on hand, the oldest paver truck, which was at least 15 years old, will head to the salvage yard.

Aside from eliminating a rough drive, the increased focus on paving also opens new opportunities for roadway safety enhancements, including potential upgrades like new bike lanes, on-street parking, and improved drainage where needed.

Since Mayor Castor took office in 2019, 275 lane-miles of Tampa's streets have been repaved, with many more on the way. In fact, in FY26, the City's paving budget will increase significantly to about $41 million, thanks largely to rollover funds and $21.1 million in All For Transportation funds.
