Equipping students for success in the classroom and beyond

by Julia Hada

Nationwide employees recently came together in a powerful display of community spirit during the company's second enterprise-wide volunteer event this year. More than 1,000 employees across three office locations assembled back-to-school supply kits, designed bookmarks and wrote thoughtful notes to inspire and encourage local students.

"When I think about employees coming together to provide these supplies, it makes me feel good to see what Nationwide is doing to support early education success," said Jeremy Staun, vice president of farm sales and underwriting at Nationwide Agribusiness and United Way of Central Iowa (UWCI) board member.

The kits were donated to local United Way partners in Ohio, Iowa and Arizona, who worked directly with school staff to ensure they reached students facing barriers to learning, such as homelessness, chronic absenteeism and economic hardship.

"The bookmarks and encouragement notes really add that personal touch," said Joy Talmon, volunteer engagement officer at the UWCI. "We're deeply grateful for Nationwide and their partnership, as well as all the employees that participate in these types of events because it really does impact our communities on a broad level, but also a personal level.

Remote employees also had the opportunity to join the effort virtually by writing encouragement cards, which were included in the kits distributed to students.

"When we look at activities like the school supply drive, Nationwide employees really help create those meaningful touch points for our students - especially those who need a little bit extra to stay engaged in school. And then, when you look at long-term outcomes, it improves attendance, builds stronger relationships with caring adults and increases career readiness," continued Talmon.

Through this initiative, Nationwide continues to demonstrate how purpose-driven action can empower students and strengthen communities with one backpack, bookmark, and note at a time.
