What Happens After Election Day

The post-election canvassing process is designed to maintain the integrity of every election and ensure that the results accurately reflect the choices of the voters. The Ontario County Board of Elections is required to take a number of steps before an election can be certified.

Important post-Election Day Deadlines:

  • Early Mail and Absentee ballots were able to arrive up until November 12th - as long as they were postmarked by Election Day.
  • Military and Overseas ballots can arrive until November 18th - as long as they were postmarked by Election Day.
  • All Early Mail, Absentee, Military, and Overseas ballots must be canvassed by November 19th.
  • Therecanvass of returns must be completed by November 20th.
  • Post-election audit must be completed and certified by November 20th.
  • The election results must be certified and Statement(s) of Canvass transmitted to the State Board by November 30th.

The Board of Elections will upload the final, certified results to the Election Results Archive when all the work described above is completed.

When the State Board of Elections receives the Statements of Canvass from all 62 counties in New York, it will schedule a meeting of State Board of Elections' Board of Canvassers to review the statewide canvass of results and certify the General Election. That meeting must be held by December 9th.
