WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congressman Andy Harris, M.D. (MD-01) congratulated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on receiving approval to begin recruiting and admitting students to its School of Veterinary Medicine, which he helped establish by securing $1 million in Fiscal Year 2026 federal funding for equipment.
UMES received a Letter of Reasonable Assurance from the American Veterinary Medical Association's Council on Education, a key step toward full accreditation. The school expects to welcome its inaugural Doctor of Veterinary Medicine class in summer 2027.
Statement from Congressman Harris:
"Congratulations to UMES on receiving approval to recruit and admit its first class of veterinary students. I'm proud to have secured $1 million in FY26 funding for equipment to help establish Maryland's first veterinary school here on the Eastern Shore and prepare future veterinarians to serve our region's farmers and animal owners."
