President Claudia Sheinbaum Meets with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany

President Claudia Sheinbaum today received Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany at the Maya Museum of Cancún. President Steinmeier is on an official visit to Mexico, accompanied by government and business delegations.

The two heads of state discussed topics of mutual interest on the global agenda and the main issues in the bilateral relationship.

The presidents reaffirmed the strategic character of German-Mexican relations, particularly in the economic sphere, where a strong, dynamic, multi-sector partnership exists to the shared benefit of both peoples.

They agreed that the modernized Mexico-European Union Global Agreement, soon to be signed, will create new trade and investment opportunities, adding to those already offered by Plan México in sectors of shared interest such as pharmaceuticals, automotive, infrastructure, and transportation, among others.

They also agreed on the need to seek sustainable peaceful solutions to ongoing international conflicts, and stressed that the fundamental norms of international law that make peaceful coexistence among nations possible must be upheld.

President Sheinbaum highlighted that both leaders agreed on the strength of the relationship between the two countries, as well as on the importance of strengthening multilateral organizations and an international order based on peace and development cooperation.

"Today we have a great opportunity, a new opportunity, with the modernization of the trade agreement with the European Union. It has already been negotiated and agreed upon and is set to be signed and finalized around May of this year. This opens up major additional opportunities for trade and economic ties between Germany and Mexico," she said.

In his remarks, President Steinmeier highlighted the investment conditions created and guaranteed in Mexico, wished all Mexicans a wonderful soccer celebration, and expressed confidence that Mexico will be an outstanding host for the upcoming World Cup.

"On the matter of security, I am confident that Mexico will do everything to ensure the safety of the World Cup," he said.

President Steinmeier's visit reaffirms Germany's interest in deepening its cooperation with Mexico - its leading partner in Latin America - as well as the confidence of the German government and business community in the existing and potential opportunities Mexico offers.

Germany has become one of Mexico's largest investors, ranking second among EU member states in cumulative investment in the country.
