JENSEN BEACH, Fla - Oct. 28, 2026 - Florida Power & Light Company's (FPL) St. Lucie Nuclear Plant Unit 1 is celebrating 50 years of safely, reliably and affordably powering Florida. Since 1976, generations of employees have helped the plant become a cornerstone of the Treasure Coast, providing dependable electricity, quality jobs and community support while maintaining a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and the protection of local marine life.
To commemorate this historic milestone, the St. Lucie team gathered for a special ceremony and unveiled a monument honoring the men and women whose dedication, professionalism and commitment to excellence have shaped the plant's remarkable 50-year legacy.
"The St. Lucie Nuclear Plant has provided safe, reliable, low-cost energy for half a century, and it will continue to power our state for decades to come," said Scott Bores, FPL's president and CEO. "We are pleased that nuclear power is and will remain an integral part of Florida's energy future and a vital contributor to the local and state economies."
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) extended both licenses an additional 20 years in 2003. Earlier this year, following a rigorous multi-year application and review process, the NRC approved subsequent license renewals for St. Lucie Nuclear Plant Units 1 and 2, extending operations through 2056 and 2063, respectively. In 2024, the NRC approved subsequent license renewals for the two units at Turkey Point, Florida's only other operational nuclear plant. Importantly, the approval ensures that Florida will continue to be powered by reliable, emissions-free nuclear energy well into the future.
Powering Florida with reliable, low-cost, American energy
Since commencing commercial operations in 1976 (Unit 1) and 1983 (Unit 2), St. Lucie has been a cornerstone of Florida's energy infrastructure. The facility:
"As we celebrate 50 years of safe and reliable operations at St. Lucie Unit 1, we reflect on the dedication of generations of employees whose commitment to excellence has made this milestone possible," said Carlos Santos, site vice president of the St. Lucie Nuclear Plant. "Since 1976, St. Lucie has played a vital role in powering Florida with dependable, carbon-free electricity, and earlier this year, the NRC's approval of subsequent license renewals for both units ensured that legacy will continue for decades to come. This achievement is a testament to our strong safety culture, operational excellence and the important role nuclear energy plays in Florida's future."
Economic engine for local communities
St. Lucie serves as a significant economic driver for the region, providing:
Expanding nuclear leadership
St. Lucie increases FPL's growing portfolio of license-renewed nuclear facilities. The Turkey Point Nuclear Plant and the Point Beach Nuclear Plant, operated by sister company NextEra Energy Resources, already received subsequent license renewal approval - demonstrating NextEra Energy's commitment to American nuclear power. The company also announced plans to restart the Duane Arnold Energy Center by Q1 2029, pending regulatory approvals. Construction and refurbishment activities are underway, including the Iowa Utilities Commission's approval of the generating certificate and NextEra securing 100% ownership of the plant.
50 years of environmental stewardship
For 50 years, Florida Power & Light Company has worked to protect the environment and marine life surrounding the St. Lucie Nuclear Plant. A cornerstone of that commitment is the station's sea turtle conservation program, which has monitored and safeguarded sea turtles in the area since plant operations began.
Since 1976, the program has monitored more than 21,000 sea turtles, with trained teams conducting health assessments, returning healthy turtles to the ocean and coordinating specialized care with rehabilitation organizations such as Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach when additional treatment is needed.
Decades of monitoring at St. Lucie have also created a significant long-term record of sea turtle biology, providing valuable information that supports scientific research and conservation. The plant builds on that work through public education programs, summer sea turtle walks and ongoing research aimed at further protecting marine life and reducing interactions with plant operations.
