World Press Freedom Day is celebrated on 3 May. The day reminds us of the importance of free and independent media as the foundation for democracy, the rule of law and an open society. Finland promotes media freedom, which is fundamental to freedom of speech and expression, as part of its foreign and security policy.
Freedom of the press is directly linked to national security, sustainable development and citizens' trust in society. Independent media supports democracy, provides reliable information to the public, holds powerful actors to account and combats misinformation and disinformation. Open communication strengthens societies' resilience and helps maintain stability even in times of crisis.
World Press Freedom Day is especially topical for Finland this year, as Finland is currently serving as co-chair of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) together with the United Kingdom. The MFC is a group of 51 countries that advocates for media freedom and the safety of journalists worldwide. The coalition lobbies extensively in cases where journalists, groups of journalists or media organisations are subject to threats.
Journalists are increasingly facing threats, violence, arbitrary arrests and legal pressure around the world. During its co-chairmanship in 2025-2027, Finland is focusing on protecting journalists and improving media literacy, as well as on broader issues related to global freedom of expression.
"In addition to escalating physical threats, journalists increasingly face online harassment, which affects women journalists in particular. Journalists reporting in conflict zones must be protected, and determined action is needed to end impunity in crimes against journalists," said Finnish and UK ministers Elina Valtonen and Chris Elmore in a joint article written as co-chairs of the Media Freedom Coalition.
A joint statement by the MFC highlights the theme of this year's World Press Freedom Day, Shaping a Future at Peace. The statement recalls that during conflicts, independent media produces factual and reliable reporting and acts as a shield against disinformation and propaganda.
