EU scales up support to Lebanese Armed Forces

In a challenging period for Lebanon and the wider region, the European Union continues to stand alongside Lebanon as a long-term partner, supporting the country's institutions, stability and recovery.

As part of this partnership, the EU is strengthening its support to the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), a key national institution that plays a crucial role in safeguarding Lebanon's security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On 9 June, the Head of the EU Delegation to Lebanon, Sandra De Waele, visited the LAF Logistics Brigade and Independent Works Regiment in Beirut to inspect newly delivered engineering and logistics equipment funded through the European Peace Facility (EPF).

The delivery includes nearly fifty specialised vehicles and engineering assets that will enhance the LAF's ability to carry out critical operational and support tasks across the country. Among them are front and backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders, mobile cranes and rotating telehandlers. These capabilities will be used for logistic operations, engineering support and recovery works. Further equipment deliveries and trainings are planned in the coming months.

The equipment is part of an EPF assistance measure adopted in early 2025 following the November 2024 ceasefire. The support is intended to facilitate the redeployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon and contribute to the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.

On 4 June, the EU and its Member States adopted a new EPF assistance measure worth EUR 100 million for the Lebanese Armed Forces.

This new package will help the Lebanese state assert its monopoly over arms and disarm non-state actors such as Hezbollah. The best way to remove Hezbollah's threat is to strengthen Lebanon's state, institutions and sovereignty. Today's funding helps to do that.

The new support is based on a capability-driven approach aimed at strengthening the LAF's ability to monitor, control and secure Lebanon's territory on land and at sea. It combines the provision of military equipment with specialised training to ensure the sustainability and long-term effectiveness of the support.

Concretely, the assistance will help equip a Land Border Regiment, strengthen the LAF's situational awareness capabilities, enhance the protection of critical military sites, improve maritime security and reinforce military medical capacities.

The total EPF support to the LAF since 2022 amounts to EUR 182 million.
