Jones Swamp Forestry Mulching Operations to Begin Sept. 17

Escambia County's Natural Resources Conservation Division will begin forestry mulching operations Thursday, Sept. 17 within the Jones Swamp Wetland Preserve, with operations including a 33-acre area near Carrick Avenue. All public trails in Jones Swamp will remain open, but the public should use caution in the area.

Forestry mulching is a conservation management technique used to control overgrown vegetation. Mulching helps improve habitat and trail accessibility while also reducing the risk of wildfires. In areas with dense and overgrown vegetation, mulching aids in reducing fuel loads for future burn operations. It is also used in areas close to neighborhoods and other human developments where prescribed fire may not be practical or safe.

Operations are expected to continue through October.
