Each lowers annual energy usage by at least 60% over baseline designs
DES MOINES, Iowa (Sept. 26, 2025) - MidAmerican Energy selected two new building construction projects, including a county roads operation center in Council Bluffs and middle school in Altoona, as this year's Excellence in Energy Efficient Design Award recipients.
The annual awards recognize outstanding efforts that lower energy usage in new construction or major renovation projects.
Both project designs receiving awards will reduce how much energy they use annually by at least 60% over baseline designs that are required by building codes:
-
Pottawattamie County Roads Operation Center: The Pottawattamie County, HGM Associates Inc., and Engineering Technologies Inc. project saves 62% in annual energy usage.
-
Southeast Polk Middle School: The Southeast Polk Community School District, FRK Architects + Engineers, and MODUS project saves 62% in annual energy usage.
Projects selected for this year's awards were completed between July 1, 2024, and June 30 of this year.
MidAmerican selects two award winners annually from projects enrolled in the Commercial New Construction program with the highest annual energy savings percentage. The program provides free energy design assistance and financial incentives to commercial customers for new construction, additions and renovation projects that implement energy-efficient strategies.
American Institute of Architects Iowa announced the recipients on Thursday at the 2025 AIA Iowa Convention in Des Moines.
