Washburn University Students and Faculty Inducted Into Phi Kappa Phi

Topeka, Kan. - Washburn University inducted its newest class of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, along with faculty members, into Phi Kappa Phi during an annual ceremony in May.

"Being inducted into Phi Kappa Phi is more than recognition of academic achievement. It is a reminder that dedication, integrity and lifelong learning have the power to create a positive legacy far beyond the classroom," said Dr. Carson Kay, assistant professor of communication studies and Phi Kappa Phi chapter president, Washburn University. "In Phi Kappa Phi, our motto calls on us to 'let the love of learning rule humanity.' Our newest members do just that. They are inquisitive and innovative minds who seek to use their skills and talents to make a meaningful impact in their communities."

  • Gavan Bergman, senior majoring in accounting from Sabetha, Kan.
  • Sierra Breedlove, senior majoring in music education from Baldwin City, Kan.

  • Kylie Davis, graduate student earning a master of accountancy from Harwood, Mo.
  • Sherry Draper, graduate student earning a Master of Arts in family & human services from Topeka, Kan.

  • Zenova Williams, associate professor and chair, Family & Human Services

Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective invitation-only multidisciplinary collegiate honor society, with more than 1.75 million members. Juniors must rank in the top 7.5% of their class, seniors in the top 10% of their class and graduate students in the top 10% of their cohort to qualify for invitation. The society may invite faculty, alumni and staff members who have achieved documented scholarly distinction. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi initiates approximately 20,000 members on more than 300 campuses across the United States and its territories. Washburn University founded its chapter in November 1971.
