Caltrans Begins Rehabilitating Central (U.S. 101) and Bayshore (Interstate 80) Viaducts

Overnight ramp closures set to begin mid-January 2026

San Francisco County ― Caltrans is launching the rehabilitation work on the Central (U.S. 101) and Bayshore (Interstate 80) viaducts, part of the San Francisco Fab-4 Rehabilitation, a critical effort to preserve and strengthen some of the region's most heavily traveled freeway structures. This is a two-year projectthat will improve structural integrity, enhance safety, and extend the service life of the viaducts while maintaining mobility through one of San Francisco's busiest transportation hubs.

Project Overview

The rehabilitation project includes complex work such as placing polyester concrete overlays, repairing bridge deck joints, rehabilitating barrier rails, and performing additional deck and structural repairs. Due to the nature of this work and the tight urban setting, motorists should expect lane reductions, overnight work, and intermittent full closures throughout the duration of the project. The project began this week with crews inspecting the structure to prepare for construction.

Why This Work Is Necessary

The Central and Bayshore Viaducts are 71 years old and carry thousands of vehicles daily near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge corridor. With constant exposure to heavy traffic loads, weather, and seismic demands, the structures require timely rehabilitation to prevent further deterioration. Performing this work now allows Caltrans to address critical maintenance needs, preserve the existing infrastructure, and ensure continued safety for motorists, commuters, pedestrians, and cyclists traveling through and beneath the structures.

Traffic Impacts

Throughout construction, Caltrans will use a combination of overnight lane reductions and intermittent full freeway closures to provide the safest possible working conditions for crews and the traveling public.

  • Nighttime lane reductions may result in extreme traffic delays.
  • Full weekend closures, when scheduled, will require motorists to avoid affected areas entirely and follow posted detours.
  • Caltrans strongly encourages motorists to use public transportation, carpool, or travel during off-peak hours whenever possible.

Traffic control measures, signage, and detours will be in place. Schedules are subject to change due to weather or operational needs.
