AASHTO Appreciates Senate Action to Ensure Continuation of Federal Surface Transportation Funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) released the following statement on Senate consideration of a federal surface transportation reauthorization extension through December 11, 2026:

"AASHTO thanks Senate leadership and the chairs and ranking members of the committees of jurisdiction for taking action to ensure federal highway, transit, and safety program funding does not lapse ahead of the September 30 expiration of the current federal surface transportation law," said AASHTO Executive Director Jim Tymon. "While the passage of a full reauthorization bill is still the priority, any gap in federal surface transportation funding would be detrimental to state departments of transportation and their ability to deliver the projects that keep people and our economy moving. This extension permits Congress to keep working toward that goal while allowing state DOTs to continue improving the safety, mobility, and quality of life for communities across the country. We appreciate the Senate's efforts and look forward to working with Congress to ensure funding for critical IIJA programs is continued in a long-term federal surface transportation measure that provides the predictability and reliability state DOTs need to meet the transportation needs of today and tomorrow."
