BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY-09) issued the following statement on the passing of singer, composer, and calypso icon, Slinger "Mighty Sparrow" Francisco:

"On behalf of the people of the 9th District of New York, the Clarke family, and myself, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the many loved ones and countless fellow fans of the internationally renowned Mr. Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, as we grieve this peerless icon's transition to paradise. Though he was born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, the Mighty Sparrow's talent was so substantial and his art so impactful, it could not be confined to the nations of the Caribbean, but instead came to be beloved across the globe. Indeed, the "Calypso King of the World" earned his crown through his remarkable talent, generous spirit, and unrelenting commitment to his craft. I have no doubt that incomparable legacy will persist long past the loss of our Legend. We will remember the Mighty Sparrow as a consummate entertainer, celebrate him as a cultural institution, and honor him as the trailblazer, charitable soul, and innovator he was. And, though our sorrow is great, may we find comfort in knowing that tonight, the Kingdom of Heaven will ring alive with sweet steel melodies and the songs and sounds of our people."
