Netflix Celebrates Mexican Cinema Day With Iconic Characters, Bold Stories, and the Richness of the local Cinema

Mexican cinema brings together perspectives, emotions and characters that invite us to see ourselves on the screen and connect us wherever we are. On August 15, we celebrate Mexican Cinema Day by doing what we're most passionate about: partnering with the country's audiovisual industry to amplify the diversity, quality and cultural impact of films made in Mexico.

The film selection we're announcing today ranges from explosive action stories to bold documentaries that connect us to real life and, of course, classic gems that remind us why we love cinema so much.

• Facing El Chapo: The feature film directed by Chava Cartas and starring Alfonso Herrera and Noé Hernández about the operation that led to the unexpected capture of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. Release date: August 21.

• Surviving Hurricane Otis : Out at sea, Wirpul and his half-brother Candi struggle to survive as an unexpected storm turns into Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 storm, off the coast of Acapulco. • Ashes: A film directed by Diego Luna and starring Anna Diaz and Adriana Paz. Following its world premiere at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, its international run at the San Sebastián, Toronto and Sarajevo film festivals, and its theatrical release, it will be available on Netflix in Latin America, Spain and Portugal.

• 35 días : Julián is a loving father and a travel journalist who deeply loves his daughter. His drinking has taken up an increasingly large part of his life, eventually leading him to hit rock bottom. During 35 days of rehab, without a cell phone and learning to ask for help, Julián begins the journey back to himself and to his family. A story about love, second chances, and the possibility of being there again for those we care about most.

• El enemigo del pueblo : A film directed by Luis Estrada and starring Emiliano Lach, Alfonso Herrera, Cassandra Ciangherotti, José Ramón Soroiz, Rafaella López, Naian González Norvind, and Tessa Ia. Set in Mexico in late 1993, it follows a young student who leaves behind his conservative education to join the Zapatista revolution.

• Liliana's Invincible Summer : In 1990, Liliana Rivera Garza, a young architecture student, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, at a time when the word "femicide" didn't yet exist. Thirty years later, her sister, writer Cristina Rivera Garza, embarks on a quest through her sister's archives-her diaries, her letters-and testimonies from those who knew her to reconstruct her life: a charming, intelligent, radiant young woman, in love with love itself and with an enormous desire to take on the world. Based on the book of the same name, Liliana's Invincible Summer , the documentary intertwines memory and investigation while revealing how the absence of a language to name that violence contributed for decades to impunity and silence. Starting August 13, members will be able to access the exclusive section Celebrating Mexican Storytelling . This page is dedicated to celebrating all content made in Mexico, and also coincides with Netflix's 15th anniversary in the country.

This collection on Netflix will invite members to rediscover Mexican content that reflects the richness and diversity of the country: from award-winning films and comedies to dramas, love stories, and documentaries that portray the reality of the country. It serves as a gateway for members to find, all in one place, a wide selection of Mexican titles.
