Norway: Hospitality workers win major victory after six-week strike

Published: 18/06/2026

After six weeks of determined strike action and workplace mobilization, IUF affiliate Fellesforbundet has secured a significant victory for hospitality workers across Norway.

Following lengthy mediation, Fellesforbundet and the employer association NHO Reiseliv accepted a proposal from the National Mediator on May 28, 2026, bringing an end to a dispute that involved workers throughout the hotel and restaurant sector.

The agreement delivers substantial wage improvements for low-paid workers, strengthens recognition of skills and qualifications, and secures a breakthrough on one of the union's key demands: Advance payment of sick pay.

This outcome is the result of the remarkable commitment and solidarity shown by thousands of workers who remained united throughout more than six weeks of industrial action. By standing together, workers demonstrated the power of collective action and secured meaningful improvements to their wages and working conditions. The strike also strengthened the union, with more than 1,000 workers joining Fellesforbundet during the dispute.

A central issue in the dispute was the demand for advance payment of sick pay. For many workers, having to wait for reimbursement from the public system can create significant financial hardship during periods of illness. The new agreement establishes advance payment of sick pay for eligible employees from June 2027, marking an important gain not only for hospitality workers but also for broader discussions taking place across the Norwegian labour market.

Fellesforbundet's members overwhelmingly voted in favour of the agreement.

The national collective agreement (Riksavtalen) between Fellesforbundet and NHO Reiseliv covers workers in hotels, restaurants, catering, accommodation and related services. More than 9,000 union members are covered by the agreement.

Fellesforbundet's determined campaign is a powerful reminder that collective bargaining rights, strong unions and worker solidarity remain essential tools for improving wages, defending social protections and building fairer workplaces.

By standing together, workers demonstrated the power of collective action and secured meaningful improvements to their wages and working conditions.
