Niagara University’s Graduate Programs in TESOL Now Offered Online

Niagara University's College of Education now offers on online master's degree and advanced certificate programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

"Our online graduate programs in education offer tremendous flexibility, allowing students to pursue advanced degrees while balancing their professional and personal commitments, and providing a pathway for educators to continue their professional growth as they gain the knowledge and skills to teach all learners," said Dr. Kathleen McGrath, associate professor and chair of the TESOL department. "What makes our TESOL program particularly special is its strong focus on the unique needs of other language learners, equipping educators with the strategies and expertise to support diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds effectively."

Both programs provide students with the knowledge and skills to effectively teach English language learners while preparing to meet state certification requirements. The M.S.Ed. program is designed for students who are seeking initial teacher certification in New York state for TESOL, while also satisfying other requirements for professional certification, while the advanced certificate in TESOL program is for practicing teachers who hold initial certification in education and wish to add more credentials.

Both curriculums are designed to meet the growing demand for teachers who work with English language learners, focusing on the theories, strategies, and methods for teaching this specialized population. Students gain an awareness and understanding of the sociocultural and sociolinguistic issues that impact the acquisition of English as an additional language, as well as advance their abilities for effective communication. The program also offers opportunities to travel abroad.

All programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and can be completed on a full- or part-time basis. Niagara's rolling admissions option enables students to apply at any time for the upcoming semester. Applications are reviewed as they come in, and students are typically notified of an admission decision in 3-4 weeks.
