Anthropology conference on campus during Spring Break

The Alaska Anthropological Association meetings will be hosted by the Department of Anthropology & Geography on the UAA campus during spring break, March 12 - 15.

Two food trucks will be available in front of the Lucy Cuddy Hall during the conference, March 13 - 14. Students and employees on campus are able to get lunch and check the craft vendors and book sales in the building.

The deadline for paper abstracts is Jan. 31 for those interested in presenting a paper or poster relevant to Alaska or Arctic anthropology or attending (there are reduced costs for students, and the registration fee is waived for volunteers).

The conference will also feature two public presentations thanks to the generous support of the Elizabeth Tower Foundation.

The first presentation will be Wednesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. in the Wilda Marston Theater at the Loussac Library by Rudy Reimer, Ph.D., Department of Archaeology, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, a member of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw/Squamish Nation. Reimer is an archaeologist who works primarily on the west coast of British Columbia adjacent to the Salish Sea and Plateau and western Subarctic regions. He will be speaking on "Markers of the Ancestors: Using multiple lines of evidence to interpret rock art".

Julia Christensen, Ph.D., Department of Geography and Planning, Queens University, Kinston, Ontario, will speak Thursday, March 13, at 6 p.m. in the Wilda Marston Theater. Christensen is a sociologist from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and is interested in homelessness in the Far North. Her presentation is titled "Housing, Homelessness and Social Policy in Northern Canada."
