On March 17, 2026, Elmedin Konaković, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, attended a conference marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Executive Secretariat of the Central European Initiative (CEI) in Trieste. The event was hosted at the invitation of Antonio Tajani, Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Italy.
The Central European Initiative is the oldest and largest regional initiative in Central Europe, with a mission to strengthen regional cooperation, support European integration, and connect countries through political dialogue, economic projects, and cultural exchange.
Minister Konaković participated in a panel discussion titled "Strengthening the Spirit of CEI - Closer in the Region, Stronger in Europe." Other panel participants included Oana Țoiu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania; Marko Đurić, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia; Olexandr Mischenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine; Mihai Popșoi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova; Tanja Fajon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia; Gordan Grlić-Radman, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Croatia; and Tomaš Taraba, Deputy Prime Minister of Slovakia.
Minister Konaković emphasized that the European path for Bosnia and Herzegovina remains the top priority, highlighting that regional stability and cooperation are essential for progress. He noted the strong economic connections between Bosnia and Herzegovina and its regional neighbours, as well as the European Union, stating that these connections are crucial for strengthening the economy and accelerating Bosnia and Herzegovina's European journey.
The Minister mentioned that opening European doors through new investments represents a vital opportunity to bolster the country's economy. He emphasized that such investments not only contribute to economic growth but also create better living and working conditions for young people, thereby fostering a brighter future in the country. In this context, he praised the CEI's role in supporting reform processes and emphasized that aligning domestic standards with European standards is the path Bosnia and Herzegovina should follow.
Addressing challenges, the Minister warned of significant external influences within Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly from Russia, which some political actors and parties are attempting to exploit to hinder the country's European path. He stressed that, in such circumstances, Bosnia and Herzegovina needs allies, support, and partners, asserting that the CEI serves as a reliable support system for strengthening alliances, maintaining regional stability, and working toward a shared European future.
