ATLANTA - State Representative Dr. Karla Drenner (D-Avondale Estates), chair of the DeKalb House Delegation, will speak at the DeKalb County School Board public meeting to express concerns about the recent reduction of recess time across elementary schools in the district TODAY, Monday, August 11, 2025, at 5:45 p.m. in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
During the meeting, Rep. Drenner will provide remarks and urge the Board to establish a clear, district-wide minimum recess policy aligned with CDC recommendations to support student physical and mental health.
Rep. Drenner reports that research from the CDC shows daily recess supports children's physical health, emotional regulation, social skills, academic performance and behavioral well-being. Additionally, she reports that in DeKalb County, some neighborhoods report youth overweight and obesity rates approaching 40 percent, making consistent recess critical for health and learning. Rep. Drenner also states that recent cuts to recess-without public input or Board approval-undermine student health, behavioral wellness and community trust.
Following the meeting, Rep. Drenner will be available for interviews.
