Wayne State ranks in top 1.7% of universities worldwide

Wayne State University continued a strong year of recognition for its academic, research and community contributions, most recently ranking in the top 1.7% of universities worldwide, according to the 2025 edition of the Global 2000 list by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). Wayne State placed 344th out of more than 21,000 institutions globally, and ranked 104th out of 1,995 in the United States.

The global recognition follows several other accolades celebrating Wayne State's leadership in academics, research and innovation. This spring, WSU retained its classification as an R1 institution with "very high research activity" by the American Council on Education and Carnegie Foundation. The university has held this prestigious R1 ranking for more than 30 years, and also boasts Carnegie's highest classification for community engagement. Earlier this year, Wayne State was also named one of the top 100 public universities in the country in the 2025 U.S. News & World Report Best College rankings.

"This international recognition of Wayne State's academic and research excellence is unmistakable evidence of our university's tremendous national impact," said Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy, president of Wayne State University. "As a top-tier urban public research institution, we are proud of the role our faculty and alumni have in driving innovation and economic prosperity for our communities."

The Global 2000 list is the largest academic ranking of global universities, and is unique because its methodology is based entirely upon objective, outcome-based indicators related to academics, research and alumni employment, without any reliance on impression surveys or university submissions. The CWUR's ranking methodology is based on the academic and professional success of each university's alumni, the number of faculty members who receive top academic distinctions, and the publication of high-impact, frequently cited and influential research.

"The objective data used to compile these rankings - along with our numerous other accolades - demonstrate the success of our outstanding faculty, but also the direct impact of a Wayne State education based on the success of our alumni," said Dr. Laurie M. Lauzon Clabo, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. "Wayne State is a leader - locally, nationally and globally - in advancing knowledge and preparing the next generation to thrive."
