SAN DIEGO - SAN DIEGO - Mayor Todd Gloria issued the following statement on the Budget Committee's vote to end the City's use of automated license plate readers.
"Automated License Plate Readers are helping San Diego police solve serious crimes, recover stolen vehicles and property, and locate missing people. Taking this proven tool away from our officers would be a serious mistake and a step backward for public safety.
"San Diego established the strongest privacy protections and public oversight, including independent privacy review, audits, and public reporting for the use of this technology through the TRUST Ordinance adopted in 2022. It has allowed us to strike the balance that protects people's privacy while giving our officers the tools they need to keep our neighborhoods safe.
"Elected leaders shouldn't be making life easier for criminals. We should be making it easier for our constituents. That's why I urge the full City Council to preserve this important public safety tool and allow the established oversight process to work."
