Hoyer Statement on Federal Raid on Congresswoman Omar's Home

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement after federal agents raided the Washington, D.C. residence of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN-05):

"I am deeply concerned that Rep. Ilhan Omar, an elected Member of Congress, had her home raided by federal immigration authorities after President Trump repeatedly attacked her legitimacy as an American and threatened to take action in response to her repeated opposition to his policies. It is essential that the levers of justice are never politicized. We are a nation of laws, not individuals. If law enforcement has probable cause to conduct a search or pursue charges against a sitting Member of Congress, officials ought to do so with the highest level of transparency and the utmost professionalism. Just as federal officials should always exercise sound judgment, care for individual rights, and respect for our Constitution in any encounter, no matter what directives they receive from political appointees. I will continue to monitor this situation closely and will be keeping Rep. Omar and her family in my thoughts."
