Summer Pet Safety Tips with Pleasanton Ambassadog, Jeter

Summer Pet Safety Tips with Pleasanton Ambassadog, Jeter

  • July 8, 2025

Keep your pets safe from the heat this summer with these helpful tips from the City and our official Ambassadog, Jeter.

  • Never leave pets in a parked car. Temperatures inside can quickly become dangerous, even with the windows cracked and even on a day that's just "warm."
  • Take walks early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid peak heat.
  • Test the pavement-if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for paws.
  • Keep water bowls filled inside and outdoors, and bring extra water on walks.
  • Make sure pets have access to shade and fans.
  • Watch for signs of heatstroke: heavy panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting. Move to a cool, shaded area immediately and apply tepid (not ice cold) water to areas like neck, belly, armpits, and feet to help bring their temperature down. Offer water but don't make them drink. Seek veterinary care right away!

Let's help our furry friends stay cool all summer long!
