Dr. Joy Daggs

Dr. Joy Daggs, a professor of communication at Northwest Missouri State University, recently received the Iowa Communication Association's (ICA) Citation Award.

ICA presented the award to Daggs on Sept. 26 at its luncheon and business meeting in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The Citation Award is a board-nominated honor presented to a person who has consistently demonstrated exceptional service to the communication or performing arts in Iowa during an extended period. It is the highest award the association bestows.

Daggs began her service with ICA after attending her first conference in 2001 as a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa, and she made her first academic presentation the next year. She has maintained her membership in ICA, benefitting from its focus on collegial relationships and pedagogy.

Daggs serves as past-president of the organization, having served as president from 2022 to 2024. Previously, she served as a member at large on the ICA executive board.

She also represents the state of Iowa on the Central States Communication Association's States Advisory Committee. She has served both the Central States Communication Association and the National Communication Association in a variety of roles, most notably as a member at large on the Central States Communication Association's Executive Board from 2017 to 2019. She also has played an active role advocating for state associations by ensuring they have a space in the exhibit hall to distribute information.

Daggs joined the Northwest faculty in 2012. She holds a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a master's degree in communication studies from the University of Northern Iowa and a bachelor's degree in English communications from William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. Her academic interests include crisis communication, communication teaching, organizational impression management and academic mentorship.
