The Lumberjacks tallied 12 hits opposed to eight hits from the Texans. Tarleton State did not record an error while the Lumberjacks registered one. The Texan bullpen notched six strikeouts, doubling SFA's total of three.
Stephen F. Austin had the opening run of the ballgame thanks to three straight singles and an RBI from Dante Turgeon that scored Josh Ibe. The Lumberjacks would go on to hold a 1-0 lead until the third inning.
In the bottom of the third, registered a single and a stolen base to set him up in scoring position. drew a walk, then both runners were drove in by a two-RBI double from , making the game 2-1 in favor of Tarleton State. Gostisha's double marked his fourth hit and his second extra-base hit in his last two appearances.
The ballgame remained in favor of Tarleton State until the fifth inning when Josh Ibe blasted a two-run home run to give the Lumberjacks a 3-2 lead. Despite a single from in the sixth inning, the Texans remained behind, unable to capitalize.
The Lumberjacks extended their lead in the seventh stanza, tacking on two more runs thanks to a pair of hits from Dante Turgeon and Mark Henning. and would go on to tally two consecutive doubles in the bottom of the seventh. Tarleton State, however, remained scoreless and ended their inning via a strikeout with the bases loaded.
Despite a strong closing performance from , the Texans were unable to erase the deficit and ultimately lost the series opener, 5-2.
Tarleton State Baseball will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. when they face the Lumberjacks for the second game of the three-game series.
