Twenty-five years ago, the Sept. 11 attacks changed the course of history, reshaping commercial aviation and the world far beyond it. A quarter century later, the weight of that tragic day is felt by many just as powerfully as it was then. Flight crews, airline passengers and office workers lost their lives alongside first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice saving others. On this milestone anniversary, Delta is honoring those lives lost by sponsoring 9/11 Day and joining the nonprofit's national volunteer efforts to pay tribute to the anniversary of Sept. 11 through service.

"Twenty-five years later, the events of Sept. 11, 2001, are still a vivid and painful memory. What struck me most was the silence. At our headquarters next to the busiest airport in the world, the skies fell empty. It's a silence I will never forget," said CEO Ed Bastian. "But we carry forward the memory of the lives cut short by serving our communities with the spirit of unity, compassion and resilience that emerged in its aftermath."

This is the fourth year Delta has partnered with 9/11 Day and is the largest single day of volunteerism in Delta's history. Fifteen hundred Delta people and customers across 40 cities worked together to assemble meals for Americans facing hunger through Feeding America food banks while standing with communities still shaped by the events of Sept. 11.
