Commissioner Causey urges safety as children head back to school

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey urged adults and children alike to keep safety in mind as school bells begin to ring across the state.

"We all have a role to play when it comes to keeping children safe during their trips to and from school," Commissioner Causey said. "Caution should rule when we see a school bus, school children walking to class or when driving in a school zone."

Commissioner Causey offered the following safety reminders as most traditional public schools prepare to start the week of Aug. 24:

For drivers:

  • Never pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights and extended stop arm. Doing so is a Class 1 misdemeanor and can result in a motorist having four insurance points added to their policy, potentially doubling automobile insurance premiums. Worse, it could result in the injury or death of a child.
  • Note: Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Use caution.
  • Yield to pedestrians and don't block crosswalks. Slow down and take extra precautions in school zones.

For pedestrians:

  • Walk on sidewalks and use crosswalks whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk and you must walk on the street or road, walk facing traffic.
  • Don't walk while texting or talking on the phone.
  • Parents: Practice walking to school with your child.

For bicycle riders:

  • Always wear a helmet that is fitted and secured properly.
  • Know the rules of the road. Use hand signals.
  • Wear bright-colored clothing.

The start of the new school year is an exciting time for our children. Let's work together to make sure it's a safe time.
