Santa Fe, we need your help! The City of Santa Fe River and Watershed Division, in partnership with River Source, is working to restore milkweed to a river staging area that was used during a recent repair project. Milkweed is essential for monarch butterflies, as it's the only plant their caterpillars can eat and the only place where monarchs lay their eggs.

The Institute of Applied Ecology and local advocate Jeanne DiLoreto have provided milkweed seeds and starts, which were be planted on March 21st. We need volunteers to help water these young plants starting March 24th! Location: Santa Fe River Road & Calle Don Jose. All milkweed plugs are marked with orange flagging tape and a small ring of rocks around them. Just bring a jug of water and give these critical plants a drink!

How to Help:

  • Bring a jug (or use one provided)

  • Find a plant marked with a rock and orange tape

  • Check the soil - if it's dry, it needs water!

  • Slowly pour at least ¼ gallon at the base of the plant

  • Water as many as you can!

  • Refill your jug for the next volunteer
