Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague issues statement on officer-involved shooting

Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague issued the following statement on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026, following the Sept. 15 officer-involved shooting in Iowa City.

Our community experienced a tragic event Tuesday evening that resulted in the loss of a life.

My heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the individual who died, as well as everyone who was directly impacted by what occurred, including the officers, those who witnessed the event, and the first responders involved. A loss of life in our community is significant, and I know this incident may bring many emotions, concerns, and questions throughout Iowa City.

An independent investigation is underway, and it is important that we allow that process to establish the facts surrounding what occurred.

In the days ahead, I hope we continue to care for one another and remain committed to being a community where every life has value, people feel safe, and trust, transparency, and accountability remain important.
