Thailand ratifies Convention No. 155.

On Tuesday, 10 June 2025, Thailand's Minister of Labour, Phiphat Ratchakitprakar, presented the instrument of ratification of the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No. 155) and the Protocol to the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2002 (P 155) to the ILO Director-General, Gilbert F. Houngbo.

In depositing the instruments of ratification, the Minister indicated: "The ratification of Convention No.155 and its Protocol of 2002 highlight Thailand's commitment to protecting labour rights in line with international standards, fostering a safe and healthy working environment, and building a sustainable safety culture. The aim is to prevent and reduce occupational accidents and diseases while enhancing workers' quality of life and promoting decent work for all in Thailand ".

When receiving the instrument of ratification, Houngbo, declared: "The central importance of occupational safety and health was reaffirmed in 2022, when the right to a safe and healthy working environment was recognized as one of the fundamental principles and rights at work. I sincerely welcome Thailand's ratification of Convention No. 155 and its Protocol, which reflects the country's strong and ongoing commitment to safeguarding this fundamental right. This step also reinforces Thailand's dedication to promoting occupational safety and health in a continuous and sustainable manner, with a view to preventing occupational accidents and diseases. The ILO looks forward to continuing its close collaboration with Thailand in this work".

In June 2022, at its 110th session, the International Labour Conference of the ILO adopted the Resolution on the inclusion of a safe and healthy working environment in the ILO's framework of fundamental principles and rights at work, which declared Conventions Nos 155 and 187 to be part of the fundamental Conventions. The Government of Thailand has received technical assistance from the ILO in the framework of the project Promoting a safe and healthy working environment in Thailand and Cambodia, funded by the Japanese government. This project aims at improving safety and health of the workers through the ratification and application of OSH fundamental Conventions.
