The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.
Below are some tips and projects they are working on:
Stormwater Sinkhole Stabilization and Repairs Completed
The Public Works Stormwater Department, in coordination with a contractor, recently completed a project to stabilize a sinkhole. Sinkholes like this are often caused by collapsed pipes, underground water movement, and shifting soils, which can lead to hazardous and unstable ground conditions.
In this case, the sinkhole was located in a hard-to-access area, requiring the use of a large excavator and corrugated sheet pile shoring to safely stabilize the surrounding soil. Once the area was secured, clay soil was brought in and carefully compacted to plug the hole and ensure long-term slope stability and erosion control.
With the subsoil restored, the final step will be to add a top layer of soil and install sod to complete the surface restoration.
Mechanical Step Screen Repairs
The replacement of the damaged gearbox on the fine-tooth mechanical step screen at League City's Southwest Water Reclamation Facility was a critical maintenance action. This repair ensures effective debris removal from incoming wastewater, safeguarding downstream processes and maintaining the facility's ability to release high-quality treated water into the environment.
Filler Neck Replacement
A 2016 Ambulance reported to have a leakage from the filler neck while filling up. The fuel filler neck is the pipe or tube that connects the fuel cap opening (where you insert the gas pump nozzle) to the fuel tank. It's the path fuel travels when you fill up your vehicle. The leak could have been a couple of common issues like rust, corrosion, or cracks. The mechanics replaced the fuel filler hose, plus a few clamps, to repair the problem. Now the ambulance is back on the road to serve the community.
