Consul General of Nepal in San Francisco Visits UW

The University of Wyoming hosted Lakshuman Khanal, the consul general of Nepal in San Francisco, and members of his team for a campus visit April 24-25.

The San Francisco consulate was established in 2025. Khanal's trip was his first official visit to Wyoming, and it reaffirms the existing relationship between Wyoming and Nepal. Students from Nepal have enrolled in Wyoming's community colleges and university, often recruiting their family members and friends to seek higher education opportunities in Wyoming.

Before visiting UW, the delegation from Nepal met with Gov. Mark Gordon in Riverton. At UW, Khanal met with administrative and academic leaders, including President Ed Seidel. Programmatic discussions centered on areas of established collaboration, including ongoing efforts in student mobility, faculty-led research and targeted student recruitment initiatives. Discussions emphasized shared priorities in areas such as rangeland and wildlife management, forest ecology and production, water and hydrology, energy development, and restoration of disturbed landscapes.

The visit also explored opportunities to connect academic programs with Nepal's infrastructure development priorities, including potential collaboration aligned with the Millennium Challenge Corporation Nepal Compact, reinforcing a mutual commitment to expanding impactful, interdisciplinary cooperation.

After the meetings concluded, Khanal provided a public presentation, sharing information about Nepal and how working with Wyoming can support new initiatives of the reformed government. To close the visit, the Friends of Nepal, a UW student organization, hosted a community social and celebration.
