How to Safely Dispose of Spent Fireworks

Published on July 01, 2025

Fireworks play a role in celebrations throughout the year, but especially for Independence Day. While fun and festive, fireworks that are not properly disposed of can pose serious dangers to you, the city of Clearwater's solid waste team, and the environment.

Once the smoke has cleared and the fun is done, dispose of both spent and unused fireworks properly and carefully.

  1. Soak them completely in a bucket of water. Overnight is best, if possible.
  2. Wrap them up. Once fireworks are wet throughout, drain the excess water and wrap them up in a plastic bag. This helps maintain moisture.
  3. Throw them away. Toss the wet bag of used fireworks into your black barrel trash can for safe disposal. Do not place them in your blue recycling barrel or on the curb with your yard waste.

Taking these easy, extra steps will help ensure your safety and that of the city's solid waste crews.
