Westbound 95th Street lane closure

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the bridges carrying Harlem Avenue (Illinois 43) over 95th Street (U.S. 12 and 20), in Bridgeview, Chicago Ridge and Oak Lawn, a lane closure is scheduled to take place on westbound 95th Street beginning, weather permitting, Tuesday, May 26. The closure is necessary to safely install large sewer/drainage pipes.

Starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday to mid-June, westbound 95th Street from 69th Avenue to Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) will be reduced from two to one lane. Also, the southbound Harlem Avenue ramp to westbound 95th Street will be closed during that time. A detour will direct the public to Harlem Avenue (south), 103rd Street (west) and Roberts Road (north) back to 95th Street.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

The $43.3 million project is reconstructing and resurfacing Harlem Avenue over 95th Street between 92nd and 99th Place and the Harlem Avenue/95th Street interchange, improving lighting and drainage, modernizing traffic signals and constructing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps. The project also is rehabilitating the Harlem Avenue bridges over the CSX railroad and over 95th Street along with the eastbound 95th Street elevated ramp to southbound Harlem Avenue outer connector ramp over the CSX railroad. Additionally, 95th Street from I-294 to New England Avenue will be resurfaced and new storm sewers installed.

The overall project is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
