MOAB, UT - From July 27 through October 1, 2026, the Grand View Point area of Canyonlands National Park will be closed from 6 a.m. Mondays to 4 p.m. Thursdays to complete Phase Three of a multi-year project to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety.

During those four days each week, Grand View Point Overlook, Grand View Point Trail, and 0.3 mi (0.5 km) of park road will be closed to all vehicles, tour buses, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The project area will reopen for public use at 4 p.m. each Thursday and stay open through weekends, closing again at 6 a.m. Monday mornings. While open, parking may be limited due to construction materials and equipment along the roadway.

"Seeing this long-planned upgrade of Grand View Point becoming a reality is a real achievement toward providing improved visitor access and enjoyment of this amazing location," said Superintendent Lena Pace.

Grand View Point is a primary destination at the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands. The new parking lot design will provide safe, formalized parking stalls, pedestrian walkways, and expanded toilet facilities appropriate for the number of visitors at this popular site.

To minimize the impact on park visitors, work on this project has been phased across multiple years, starting in 2024, and scheduled for weekdays only during late summer when visitation traditionally slows down. The final phase will occur between July and September of 2027.

This project is funded by the Congressionally authorized Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. Under this program, parks keep 80 percent of fees collected on-site and use the money to fund important projects that improve visitor services and protect resources for current and future generations to enjoy.
