SIIA Joins Coalition Urging Withdrawal of Harmful USPTO PTAB Rule Changes

SIIA joined a broad coalition of organizations representing nearly the entire U.S. economy in urging the Administration to withdraw the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's proposed revisions to rules governing the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). The coalition warns that the proposed rules would severely restrict access to PTAB proceedings-the primary forum for efficiently challenging invalid patents-while disproportionately benefiting patent trolls, foreign adversaries, and certain entrenched interests.

The letter outlines how the rules would weaken protections against abusive patent litigation, undermine U.S. leadership in critical technologies such as artificial intelligence and semiconductors, and drive up prescription drug prices by insulating low-quality pharmaceutical patents from review. The coalition calls on the Administration to withdraw the proposal and review recent USPTO actions that were implemented without proper rulemaking or oversight.
