Is GE Vernova Stock A Real Bargain

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

After a sharp fall over the past month, GE Vernova (GEV) stock trades at 21.4 times earnings, sitting below the median S&P 500 company's 22.9. Including dividends, the shares lost 19.0% from October 6 to November 4, 2026. Yet in fiscal Q1 2026 alone, the company booked $4.75 billion of profit on $0.179 billion of operating income. For the gas turbine and grid equipment maker to be on sale, its orders have to keep turning into cash, and its operations have to grow into the profit that multiple is measured on.

GE Vernova's Orders Are Turning Into Cash

GE Vernova generated $17.1 billion of free cash flow over the four quarters ended September 30, 2026, compared with $2.47 billion in the twelve months before. Sales rose 16.9% over those same four quarters, about twice the 8.6% growth of the median S&P 500 company.

The Power segment, which sells gas turbines and services, brought in $19.8 billion of the company's $38.1 billion revenue in fiscal 2025. Electrification, the grid equipment business, grew its revenue 27.7% that year. On its fiscal Q3 2026 call, management said the order backlog had grown to $197 billion, adding that about 20% of its gas turbine customers are data centers.

A Fourth Of GE Vernova's Profit Came From Operations

Over the same four quarters, GE Vernova reported $10.4 billion of net income, the profit behind its P/E, but only $2.83 billion of operating income. Two quarters accounted for the difference. Management said fiscal Q1 2026 profit included $4.5 billion of gains from deals, mainly the Prolec acquisition. Besides fiscal Q1 2026, GE Vernova booked $3.66 billion of profit on $0.602 billion of operating income in fiscal Q4 2025.

That lifted the net margin for the latest twelve months to 23.5%, compared with an average of 10.6% across the last three twelve-month periods, this one included. The operating margin rose from 0.2% in the twelve months ended September 2024 to 3.7% a year later. It reached 6.4% in the latest twelve months, or about a third of the median S&P 500 company's 18.9%. So GE Vernova looks cheap on a profit its operations have not yet earned.

Is GE Vernova's Operating Profit Catching Up?

It began to in the latest quarter. GE Vernova posted an 11.0% operating margin in fiscal Q3 2026, up from 3.7% in fiscal Q3 2025. That quarter's $1.29 billion of profit came in below its $1.39 billion of operating income.

Management raised its revenue, margin and free cash flow guidance for 2026 on the same call. It now expects the Power segment's adjusted EBITDA margin, its own measure, at 19% to 21%, up from its earlier adjusted range of 17% to 19%.

Customers paying ahead accounted for part of that quarter's cash. Management said working capital added $5.3 billion of cash in fiscal Q3 2026, driven mainly by down payments on orders and slot reservations at Power. With management putting the quarter's free cash flow at $5.4 billion, working capital supplied most of it. That cash arrived before GE Vernova built the equipment it pays for.

What Are You Betting On At This Price?

You would be betting that GE Vernova fixes a real problem, its thin operating profit, rather than betting that the market has missed a sound business. Management is pointing the same way, calling the second half of 2026 the right starting point for Power margins in 2027. On sales, the shares cost 5.0 times, against 3.2 for the S&P 500 as a whole, so the price appears to assume the operating margin keeps rising.

GE Vernova's orders are turning into cash, though part of that cash is down payments, and its operating income covered its profit in fiscal Q3 2026, the latest quarter. Set beside its net income, GE Vernova's operating income for fiscal Q4 2026 is the number to watch in the report expected in January 2027.

Does This Mean You Should Act On GEV?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
