The 22nd European Remembrance Day for Victims of Terrorism

This annual ceremony honours the victims and survivors of terrorist attacks across Europe and reaffirms the European Union's solidarity with those affected.

The 22nd European Remembrance Day for Victims of Terrorism takes place in Brussels, marking ten years since the Brussels terrorist attacks of 22 March 2016. Opening remarks will be delivered by Commissioner Brunner and t11 March marks the European Remembrance Day for Victims of Terrorism - an annual commemoration established by the EU after the 2004 Madrid attacks.he Prime Minister of Belgium, Bart De Wever. The programme will feature testimonials from victims and survivors of major terrorist attacks, including the 2016 Brussels and Nice attacks, the 2003 attack against the UN headquarters in Baghdad, and the September 11 attacks in 2001.

The aim of the Remembrance Day is to increase awareness and support for victims of terrorism, fostering unity and resilience across EU countries. It also provides a space for victims and survivors to share their experiences, ensuring that their voices remain at the heart of efforts to prevent radicalisation and combat violent extremism.

What the EU is doing to prevent terrorism and radicalisation

The major EU initiative aimed at bolstering EU's efforts against radicalisation leading to violent extremism and terrorism is EU Knowledge Hub on Prevention of Radicalisation.

The EU Knowledge Hub brings together practitioners, policymakers and researchers working on prevention across Europe and in priority third countries. By sharing knowledge and expertise, the Hub supports the development and implementation of effective policies and strategies to prevent radicalisation.

2026 ProtectEU: Agenda to prevent and counter terrorism and violent extremism

In February 2026, the European Commission presented a new agenda to prevent and counter terrorism. The agenda sets out the way forward to reinforce Europe's collective response to evolving terrorist and violent extremist threats.
