The University of Toledo's Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership will welcome national leader in civic education on Thursday, Sept. 25, in honor of Constitution Day.

Dr. Paul Carrese, the founding director of Arizona State University's School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership, will present "The Constitution & Civic Education" at noon in the Law Center Room 1002.

To register for the free, public lecture, go to the institute website.

Carrese teaches and researches the founding of the United States as well as constitutional and political thought and civic education in the country, and his latest book, "Teaching America: Reflective Patriotism in Schools, College, and Culture," is anticipated in 2026. In "The Constitution and Civic Education," he will explore how America's founding principles - and the virtues required to live them - must be intentionally taught, cultivated and lived to preserve liberty.

"Dr. Carrese is a fitting speaker for the institute's second annual lecture in honor of Constitution Day," said Dr. Jonathan Culp, director of UToledo's Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership. "Civic education is crucial to a functioning democracy and Dr. Carrese will bring valuable insights to this important and timely discussion."

Constitution Day is an annual observation that commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. The UToledo College of Law also hosted a naturalization ceremony in honor of Constitution Day on Friday, Sept. 12.

The Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership is a multidisciplinary center at UToledo that was created and funded by the Ohio Legislature in 2023. Through teaching, research and public programming, the institute provides a space for diverse voices to discuss and debate key questions about U.S. society, history and politics.

Free visitor parking for the lecture is available in Area 12W.

All other visitor parking requires payment through the ParkMobile app, a parking meter or a daily permit via ParkUToledo. Visit the ParkUToledo website for more information.
