Underwater Filmmaking Course Now in Development at ORU

Tulsa, Oklahoma, July 20, 2026-Oral Roberts University's (ORU) Evan Hewitt, Professor of Cinema & Media Arts, recently completed professional training through Liquid Motion Underwater Photo & Film Academy in Cozumel, earning a Diploma in Underwater Camera Operation. This program expanded Hewitt's expertise as both a filmmaker and SCUBA Divemaster, enabling him to bring specialized underwater cinematography training into the classroom.

Currently, Hewitt is developing an Underwater Filmmaking course at ORU, along with optional local and international trips to locations such as Lake Tenkiller, where students can learn and practice underwater storytelling in real-world environments. The addition of underwater cinematography introduces students to a specialized skill set widely used in major motion pictures, nature documentaries, and adventure films.

Hewitt is also exploring potential collaborations between the film program and the University's Marine Biology Department, creating interdisciplinary opportunities that blend science, storytelling, and visual media.

The academy, Liquid Motion, is a private training institution in Cozumel's marine park, and is recognized for instruction in underwater imaging and has collaborated on projects with media partners including National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and BBC. Hewitt's training focused on advanced camera operation, lighting design, and production safety in submerged environments.

"Having multiple skill sets better prepares students for an ever-changing environment," said Hewitt. "We are planning to give students opportunities to not only learn underwater filmmaking in the classroom but to actively apply those skills through hands-on experiences. Filming underwater allows us to experience God's handiwork in a way many people do not get to see, opening the door for students to engage with a completely new medium."
