Latin American and Caribbean countries' biennial meeting to follow up on and review population and development-related issues will take place on August 18-20 in Montevideo, Uruguay, bringing together senior government officials from the region along with representatives of the United Nations, multilateral organizations, parliaments, the private sector, academia and civil society.

During thesixth session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development, participants will discuss the effects of demographic change in Latin America and the Caribbean, and they will analyze the progress, challenges, good practices and current priorities related to implementing the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.

This Regional Conference was created in 2012 by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which serves as the Secretariat, in coordination with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). At its first session - held in Montevideo on August 12-15, 2013 - delegates adopted the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development, which is the region's most important intergovernmental agreement on population and development matters and is a critical piece in the review process of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action.

The opening ceremony of the sixth session will take place on Tuesday, August 18 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time in Uruguay (GMT-3), with the participation of José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; Diene Keita, Executive Director of UNFPA; Cristina Lustemberg, Minister of Public Health of Uruguay; and Yamandú Orsi, President of Uruguay (to be confirmed).

ECLAC's highest authority - along with Simone Cecchini, Director of the Latin American and Caribbean Demographic Center (CELADE)-Population Division of the regional United Nations commission - will present at 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday, August 19, the document Impacts of Demographic Change in Latin America and the Caribbean: Public Policy Challenges and Options, which seeks to stimulate the session's debates.

The Conference's programme includes four discussion panels on issues such as "Decline in fertility," "Ageing and long-term care," "Intergenerational solidarity" and "Public policies in response to demographic change."

Prior to the start of the session, multiple stakeholders will carry out activities. On Monday, August 17, the First Regional Private Sector Forum will be held at the headquarters of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) in Uruguay, with the aim of accelerating implementation of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development through private sector leadership, impact investment and public-private collaboration. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, August 18 - before the official inauguration - the civil society preparatory meeting will take place. In addition, at least 30 side events are scheduled to be held.
