A resolution entitled 'Sport as an Enabler of Sustainable Development' was adopted without a vote by the UN General Assembly on 12 November 2024, following negotiations led by the Permanent Missions of Monaco and Qatar, who co-chair the Group of Friends of Sport for Sustainable Development.

The resolution reaffirms the contribution that sport makes in areas including education, physical and mental health, gender equality and social inclusion, and recognises the values of peace, tolerance and respect that it promotes. It also notes the efforts being made to combat corruption in sport.

Ms Alyson Calem-Sangiorgio, Second Secretary, delivered Monaco's speech at the UN General Assembly podium, recalling the power of sport to bring people together, as well as the importance of partnerships and the central role played by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Since this was the last session for IOC President Thomas Bach, a special meeting and lunch were organised in his honour by the Group of Friends of Sport. In a speech focused on the future, President Bach highlighted the impact of artificial intelligence on sport.
