The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that the replacement of the railroad crossings on Route 7 (Railroad Street) in North Canaan is scheduled to begin at approximately 5 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, and extending through Thursday, October 30. A second closure will be required beginning Tuesday, November 4,and extending through Thursday, November 6.
The existing railroad crossings, located on Route 7 near the intersection of Killawee Street, are being completely replaced with all-new materials to enhance safety, provide a smooth passage for motorists, as well as ensuring the long-term viability of freight rail service in the region.
The work to replace the railroad crossing will require a detour due to a full closure of Route 7 at the railroad crossing during construction. All businesses and residences on Route 7 will remain accessible throughout the short-term construction project. Detour routes will be clearly posted to bypass the construction site.
"This project ensures the freight line remains in a state of good repair. To ensure the safety of everyone, vehicles cannot travel through the work zone. We ask motorists to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project," said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Benjamin Limmer. "We appreciate the support and collaboration with the Town of North Canaan, local businesses, residents, and the Housatonic Railroad while this important safety improvement project takes place."
This project is being performed by the Housatonic Railroad, with assistance from a CTDOT's Rail Freight Infrastructure Program grant. Work is being performed in coordination between the CTDOT, Town of North Canaan, first responders, bus and transit providers, and Housatonic Railroad.
There will be similar railroad crossings rehabilitated on local roads in North Canaan both before and after the above work. Signage will be posted alerting residents to any pending work, and notification will be provided through local means. Detours will also be posted.
Extreme weather may alter the project schedules. Members of the public with questions are encouraged to contact the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or [email protected].
