Warning period for new speed cameras begins week of Aug. 17

New camera locations added to curb speeding and prevent crashes

The City of Bellevue is expanding its automated traffic safety program by adding speed safety cameras at four locations the week of Aug. 17. These locations include areas near hospitals, parks, school walk zones and corridors with a documented history of speed-related crashes, consistent with state law.

Speed remains a top contributing factor to fatal and serious-injury crashes in Bellevue and speed cameras are a proven method to reduce speeding. The cameras are designed to change driver behavior, reduce speeding and make streets safer for everyone who travels in Bellevue. Cameras will be added to three more locations later this year.

"We know that addressing speed is important to improving traffic safety on Bellevue's streets," said Transportation Director Andrew Singelakis. "These cameras build on Bellevue's ongoing efforts to reduce speeding, prevent serious crashes and create safer streets for our entire community."

The city will begin deploying additional speed safety cameras at locations throughout Bellevue as part of its ongoing commitment to Vision Zero, a national program that aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries. Bellevue's speed safety camera program expansion will occur in phases, beginning with an initial deployment at four locations in August and another three locations later in the year. Bellevue already operates three automated cameras in school zones across the community.

August installation:

• 148th Avenue Northeast, between Northeast 13th and 10th places
• Northeast Eighth Street, between 167th Avenue and 168th Place
• Forest Drive Southeast, between 138th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 60th Street
• Forest Drive Southeast, between Southeast 54th Place and Coal Creek Parkway

Later in 2026:

• Bellevue Way Southeast, adjacent to the South Bellevue Park and Ride
• Coal Creek Parkway Southeast, between Forest Drive Southeast and Southeast 60th Street
• 116th Avenue Northeast, between Northeast 21st Street and Aegis Living Bellevue Overlake (1845 116th Ave. NE)

Each new camera location will have a monthlong warning period to help drivers become familiar with the program. During the warning period, drivers who exceed the posted speed limit will receive warnings instead of citations. This period also serves as an important calibration and testing period for the camera equipment. Following the warning period, citations will be issued for speed violations. For the four camera locations being installed in August, citations are expected to begin in the third week of September. The fine for speed violations issued through the program is $124; the fine for a school-zone speed infraction is doubled to $248.

Bellevue contracted with Verra Mobility, a provider of automated traffic enforcement technology, to support administration of the program. The cameras capture images of vehicle license plates and associated violation evidence, which are securely transmitted for review. A Bellevue Police Department official verifies each violation before a citation is issued to the registered vehicle owner.
