County improves safety at High Springs Community School

Alachua County Public Works has installed new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at the crosswalk serving High Springs Community School to help improve pedestrian safety.

Crews completed the installation last week at the school's primary pedestrian crossing. The push-button-activated beacons are designed to increase driver awareness and visibility when students, families and staff cross the roadway.

The installations are part of the county's ongoing efforts to enhance traffic safety and protect pedestrians in school zones throughout Alachua County.

"This upgrade reinforces our commitment to keeping children safe as they travel to and from school," said Public Works Director Ramon Gavarrete. "The RRFB units provide an additional layer of visibility and driver awareness that benefits students and the entire community."

The project was completed with minimal disruption to school operations and traffic flow. Motorists should remember to obey posted speed limits and yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks, particularly during school arrival and dismissal times.

The next school zone safety improvements are scheduled for Feb. 25, 2026, at Irby Elementary School in Alachua.
