Rhode Island Energy to enhance and upgrade electrical infrastructure in Newport

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 2, 2025) - As part of the city of Newport's $128 million capital improvement plan, Rhode Island Energy will be performing a series of upgrades to electric infrastructure that will increase capacity, enhance reliability, and modernize the system.

In the Long Wharf area of Newport, Rhode Island Energy crews have already begun this work, installing new underground electric cables to upgrade the city's sewage pump station by increasing supply voltage.

In addition to the pump station improvements, Rhode Island Energy will also be working to upgrade and extend existing electrical feeders in the Long Wharf and America's Cup Ave. area to support increased electric load. Included in this project are the installation of new underground cables beneath the roadway, which will tie into existing infrastructure beyond Long Wharf. This interconnected design is expected to improve outage restoration times and overall system reliability.
