While rankings only tell part of the story, this recognition reflects the strength of Ann Arbor's broader workforce and innovation ecosystem. The region's mix of employers, entrepreneurial resources, healthcare access, educational institutions, and flexible work options continues to make it an attractive place for talent across industries.
At the same time, access to affordable and reliable child care remains a major challenge for many families - and one that directly impacts workforce participation and economic growth.
The region's Child Care Coalition brings together local child care providers, families, policymakers, employers, and community organizations to address child care challenges from an economic development perspective. Together, the coalition developed a regional action plan focused on improving access to affordable, high-quality child care while supporting providers, families, and employers alike.
The coalition's findings highlight several ongoing, including limited child care availability, rising costs for families, workforce shortages, and the ongoing financial strain many providers face. Some communities within Washtenaw County are considered "child care deserts," meaning there are more than three children for every licensed child care seat available.
The issue also has direct implications for employers and the broader economy. According to the coalition's action plan, many businesses report challenges with absenteeism, productivity, and workforce retention tied to gaps in child care access.
"The lack of accessible and affordable child care is a major economic issue for our region," said Phil Santer, chief operating officer for Ann Arbor SPARK. "It forces many parents to reduce their working hours or leave the workforce, affecting local businesses and the economy."
As companies continue competing for talent, conversations around workforce participation increasingly extend beyond job opportunities alone. Access to child care, healthcare, flexible work environments, entrepreneurial resources, and community infrastructure all play an important role in long-term economic growth and talent retention.
Rankings like this offer one snapshot of the area's strengths, while ongoing efforts like the Child Care Coalition - along with innovative businesses like Recess Cafe - reflect the collaborative work happening across Washtenaw County to help ensure families, workers, providers, and employers can continue to thrive.
